Build a Dream was held on Tuesday, November 20 at the Hellenic Centre. This was the second year of the event which saw participation in the event literally double. Present were approximately 800 students and their parents who came out to learn more about career opportunities for women in the skilled trades, STEM, and law enforcement. The focus of the event was to encourage female students in grade 9-12 to consider a variety of career pathways including apprenticeship. Parents were invited to attend this free event with their daughter.
Sherry Holmes from Holmes on Homes was the keynote speaker and she emphasized how important it is for females to consider a career in the skilled trades. Female students and their parents learned a great deal while listening to the stories of six women during the speaker panel. Female mentors were present throughout the evening to speak to students and their parents about their experiences and to provide insight. Students had the opportunity to participate in hands-on construction and machining activities facilitated by Fanshawe College. Approximately 40 local employers from London and the surrounding area were present showcasing the variety of careers available to female students.
